Formed in November 1998 by trinity Rutgers students, Midtown shortly became an energetic quartet comprised of Gabe Saporta (vocals/bass), Rob Hitt (drums), Tyler Rann (guitar/vocals), and Heath Saraceno (guitar/vocals). Taking advantage of the fertile New Jersey punk rocker tantrum to develop a unparalleled sound that combined elements of emo and hardcore, Midtown began recording shortly after their formation. Their debut EP, Sacrifice of Life, was issued by Pinball Records in 1999. Their low train full-length, Redeem the World, Lose the Girl, was released in early 2000 by their friends at Drive-Thru Records and was presently picked up for distribution by MCA. Midtown dog-tired five months starting in the fall of 2001 recording their follow-up album; Living Well Is the Best Revenge appeared in April 2002.

Nonstop touring followed, including a headlining tour passim the U.S., Japan, and U.K. Midtown played a sheer of European dates with the likeminded Jimmy Eat World as well. Back at nursing home by January of 2003, tensions that had been growing betwixt the banding and Drive-Thru over feelings of unfair treatment came to a head. Unhappy passim the drama, Midtown in conclusion managed to untangle themselves from their contract with the label. Down but by all odds not out, the guys got together with manufacturer Butch Walker to record the songs that would become their next album, the moodier Forget What You Know, in November. After the band shopped it around to versatile labels, the record was picked up by Columbia and released in June 2004.

The Gipsy Kings ar largely responsible for pitch the gleeful sounds of progressive pop-oriented flamenco, called Sevillana in Spain, to the humankind. The band started out in Arles, a hamlet in southern France during the '70s when brothers Nicolas and Andre Reyes, the sons of celebrated gypsy saltation artist Jose Reyes, teamed up with their cousins Jacques, Maurice and Tonino Baliardo, whose father is Manitas de Plata. They originally called themselves Los Reyes and started out as a roma isthmus traveling near playing weddings, festivals, and in the streets. Because they lived so often care gypsies, the isthmus adopted the name the Gipsy Kings. Later, they were chartered to tag on color to posh parties in St. Tropez. Popularity did not add up to Los Reyes right away and their first base devil albums attracted small observation. At this item the Gipsies played traditional, albeit passionate flamenco music punctuated by Tonino's exact guitar playing and Nicolas' exceptional voice. Though they had devoted fans, they soundless had all the same to arrive at wider acknowledgement until 1986 when they aquiline up with visionary maker Claude Martinez world Health Organization could see that the Kings had the makings of a foremost lot.

Thanks to Martinez, the Kings began to relax a bit and choose on a more contemporary border, combining their traditional songs with sounds from the Middle East, Latin America, North Africa, a touch of tilt, and their inimitable delight. It was, in a music manufacture filled with flamenco purists world Health Organization resisted whatever kind of change, a very hardiness move, and many felt the Gipsy Kings would fall monotonous and vanish. But the nay-sayers were wrong. In 1987, they released "Djobi Djoba" and "Bamboleo," on an autonomous label and scored deuce smash up hits in France. Their success lED them to sign with Sony Music and release their eponymic debut album by and by that year. Again, they had terrific gross revenue in France and then plant their album was appearing on the Top Ten album charts in 12 European countries including England, which is traditionally unreceptive to external music. In the late '80s, the Gipsy Kings, debuted in the U.S. at a New York New Music Seminar. This light-emitting diode them to sign to Sony in America. In 1989, they were invited to perform at the inaugural ball for George Bush, simply they chose to return home to pillow and be with their families. Later that year, they held an SRO concert at the Royal Albert Hall, where the Gipsy Kings hobnobbed with some of the world's biggest come out stars including Elton John and Eric Clapton. To top off their slap-up class, the Kings' debut album washed-out 40 weeks on the U.S. charts and went au, becoming one of the few Spanish albums to do so. The Kings get had an active spill schedule e'er since, including the albums Mosaique (1989), Live! (1992), Love & Liberte (1994), Tierra Gitana (1996), Cantos de Amor (1998), Somos Gitanos (2001), Roots (2004) and Pasajero (2007).

Picking a fight: It's air guitarists vs. 'Guitar' heroes

Fake guitarists wielding imaginary axes descend on Cambridge’s Central Square for the US Air Guitar competition Thursday. The area is also the home turf of Harmonix, developers of the “Guitar Hero” and “Rock Band” video games, another way for non-musicians to pretend to shred like pros.
You’d think these two camps might bond over their mutual love of unreal guitar fun, but bad blood is brewing. It seems air guitarists and “Guitar Hero” enthusiasts simply do not play well together.
“There is no rivalry between air guitar aficionados and the weaklings who play ‘Guitar Hero,’ ” sniffed returning Boston air guitar champ Erin McNally, who competes under the name McNallica. “They have a plastic toy with buttons. I can do so much more with my guitar than they can do. My high-note slaying solos - they can’t do that. They are limited in their rocking abilities.”

Members of the “Guitar Hero” and “Rock Band” game community were quick to return fire.
“We dig real stuff here,” responded Sean Baptiste, manager of community development at Harmonix. “We have real boyfriends and girlfriends. We don’t have to imagine them.”
Brian Shandra, a research scientist at a Boston pharmaceutical company who customizes and rebuilds his own experimental “Guitar Hero” instruments, is an avowed enemy of air guitar.
“Everyone hates mimes and that’s all they really are,” he said. “Rock ’n’ roll mimes.”
Then he produces a photo showing his doomsday weapon: a “Guitar Hero” controller that literally shoots flames.
“I can set people on fire with this,” Shandra bragged. “I can cause some bad-ass destruction with this instrument of rock. You show me someone that can shoot fire out of their fingertips and then maybe I’ll be impressed.”
But the air guitar force isn’t impressed.
“They aren’t playing guitar either, it’s a plastic toy,” said Tony Fernandez, 23, a film production assistant and air guitar competitor. “Anyway, everyone plays air guitar. It’s just that we do it out in public.”
Lee Becker, a 21-year-old intern at Budweiser planning to compete tomorrow for a chance to go to the US Air Guitar finals in San Francisco on Aug. 8, takes a more philosophical view.
“We are performance artists,” he said. “I don’t know how to play real guitar, but that’s not relevant to my air guitar greatness.”
Becker’s plan for air supremacy involves bringing an element of sex to his show.
“I’ve been told that I have a rock star (butt),” he said. “I will be sporting a pair of tight jeans and I plan lots of pelvic thrusts and air humps.”
At 50 years old, Jeff Lyons of Somerville expects to be the oldest entrant in the air guitar competition. He makes no claims of sex appeal. He does, however, vow to take the top prize.
